Legendary Irish band U2 arrived in Berlin, Germany, last Thursday to throw a free mini concert for 10,000 of their fans at the Brandenburg Gate. The problem was that a two-metre metal wall blocked the view for several hundred fans outside the performance area, making the ‘free’ show not so free anymore.
The fans outside missed a great 30-minute set that ripped through classic singles like ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ and ‘One’. Even Jay-Z made a special appearance on stage to sing with Bono on a cover of Bob Marley’s ‘Get Up Stand Up’.
MTV worked with local promoters to put on the show and, according to the Associated Press report, worked with local authorities to install the fence. The performance was recorded for the MTV European Music Awards that were taking place and aired later that night during the ceremony. U2 travels the world selling out arenas and MTV tried to pull off a 10,000-person free gig? Not too smart.
